Melancholia, a film by Lars von Trier: Again a genuine look to the humankind
It's so honoring; yet not ironic to have advertising business in a film curated for a glimpse to the end of the world and to reveal a perspective on human nature.
The film suggests flawlessly how medium (the space events occur) are very definitive when it comes to bearing, understanding, recognizing human nature.
Each character represents a single-minded human type that serves to human diversity in a communal level. Although we know humans have more diverse personalities in individual level, it's quite understandable in the film for simplifying and conveying the idea successfully. Having said that, the intentionally inappropriate ambients in which these archetypes are revealed make it utterly disturbing when in real life same human interactions are mostly tolerable happening in more accepted conditions. This enables a spotlight for our attention, and also Trier's signature of misanthropic storytelling. Selfishness, fear, sexuality are main human issues highlighted in the film.
The 2nd part of the film has reflections of how we have the tendency to expect others perceive and react things in life just as we do in a pure manner. We even see how we can be so demanding in that somehow in a childish way. We can simply ask others to agree or obey our way of being to some extend. And to achieve this, individual desires are packaged in a way that serve the sake of common welfare.
The last but not the least, melancholia may be interpreted to be pictured as a state of mind occurring in rather comfortable conditions usually created by the individual as a way of seeking self-destruction (unhappiness) whereas it's spontaneously over when met public disasters. This might be Trier's wink to one of the modern society's dilemmas.
May the humankind be in an eternal pursuit of self-destruction anyways, until to the caves again.
